A bare, twisted tree with bark drawn as long flowing grooves and two wide eyes looking out of the trunk. This free spooky tree coloring page has no other objects on it — just one big shape covered in texture, which is a rarer kind of page than it sounds.

Who this page is for

Ages 5–10. There is no easy way to finish it quickly, and that is deliberate: it suits a child who likes to keep going and does not want to be done in four minutes.

Things to talk about while you color

  • Trees look frightening in stories mainly because they lose their leaves — a bare winter silhouette is the whole trick.
  • Bark patterns are as distinct between species as fingerprints. Birch, oak and pine are told apart by their grooves alone.
  • The oldest single trees alive are around five thousand years old, which means they were seedlings before the pyramids were built.

Make it an activity

Use three shades of one color — light, medium, dark — and follow the grooves rather than filling flat. The trunk turns three-dimensional, and it is a very easy introduction to shading.

How to print it so it looks great

Choose Fit to page on A4 or US Letter, full size. The bark lines sit close together and blur if the page is scaled down.

More Halloween pages to color

Hang the upside-down bat in it, or put the owl on a branch. The haunted house and the spider web are the other detailed pages; the scarecrow stands in the same kind of autumn field. Full collection: Halloween coloring pages.
