A scarecrow on his post in a floppy straw hat, patched overalls, stitched smile and straw poking out at the wrists and ankles. This free scarecrow coloring page works for Halloween and for the whole autumn term, so it is worth keeping beyond October.
Who this page is for
Ages 4–9. Lots of separate small areas — hat, shirt, patches, buttons, straw — but every one of them is a simple closed shape.
Things to talk about while you color
- Scarecrows have been used for at least three thousand years. Ancient Greek farmers carved wooden figures for the same job.
- They mostly do not work for long. Birds work out quite quickly that the figure never moves.
- The patches on the clothes are the real detail: scarecrows were dressed in whatever the family had worn out.
Make it an activity
Ask your child to color every patch a different color, as if each one came from different old clothes. It turns the page into a small story about where the scarecrow’s outfit came from.
How to print it so it looks great
Choose Fit to page on A4 or US Letter. The straw is drawn as thin spikes — print full size so they do not merge together.
