A round bucket with a smiling face, piled so high with sweets that they are spilling over the rim — wrapped toffees, swirled lollipops, twisted candy papers. This free Halloween candy coloring page is the busiest one in the set, and that is the point.

Who this page is for

Ages 5–10. There are twenty-odd small shapes in the pile. Younger children will want the simpler candy corn page; this one rewards a child who likes to settle in for half an hour.

Things to talk about while you color

  • Trick-or-treating as we know it only really spread in the 1930s and 40s — it is younger than most people assume.
  • Before sweets, children were often given nuts, fruit, coins or small toys.
  • The word “candy” comes from an Arabic word for sugar, qandi, which travelled into English through Persian and French.

Make it an activity

Set a rule before starting: no two sweets next to each other may be the same color. It turns a big empty pile into a puzzle and stops the whole thing going orange.

How to print it so it looks great

Use Fit to page on A4 or US Letter, and print at full size rather than shrinking it — the small sweets close up if you scale it down. Paper that holds fine detail.
