You’re not imagining it, and it’s not your printer. Here’s why it happens and how to get pages that print as clean black-and-white line art every time.

Why AI images print gray

Most AI image generators are built to make pictures, not line drawings. Even when you ask for “black and white outline,” they tend to add:

• Soft shading and anti-aliasing — the smooth gray edges that look fine on a screen but print as muddy fill.
• Texture and noise — faint gray speckles across what should be white space.
• Broken or unclosed lines — gaps that make the page hard to color inside.
• Over-detail — tiny elements that blur when printed at letter size.

Kids notice immediately. A page that’s 80% white with bold black lines is satisfying to color; a gray one isn’t.

How to get clean line art

The fix is post-processing — taking the raw AI image and converting it to true black and white:

1. Threshold the image. Every pixel becomes either pure black or pure white — no gray in between. This alone removes most shading and noise.
2. Clean the white space. Stray specks get cleared so the background is genuinely white (and doesn’t waste ink).
3. Check for closed lines. Good pages have continuous outlines so colors stay where they belong.
4. Size for paper. Export at a resolution that prints sharp on US Letter or A4.

The quick test before you print a class set
