Why coloring pages bleed through
- Paper is too thin. 20 lb copy paper can’t hold marker ink — it wicks straight through.
- Markers are water-heavy. Classic washable markers lay down a lot of liquid.
- Cheap printer ink runs. Off-brand ink can stay slightly wet and smear under wax crayons.
Fix 1 (free): change two print settings
Print at “Actual size” and in “Grayscale / Black only.” This won’t stop bleed-through on its own, but it gives you the crispest, driest lines to start from and stops wasting color ink.
Fix 2 (cheap): put something behind the page
Slide a scrap sheet or a thin cutting mat under the page. Bleed-through still happens on the page itself, but your table and the pages below stay clean. Good enough for everyday fun.
Fix 3 (the real fix): heavier paper
Switch from 20 lb copy paper to 32 lb bright white paper for markers, or 80 lb cardstock for gel pens and keepsakes. This is the difference between “ink everywhere” and “looks like a real coloring book.” It’s the single upgrade we recommend most.

If the lines themselves print gray or streaky
That’s an ink/printer issue, not a paper one. Off-brand cartridges are the usual culprit — they print gray instead of solid black. Genuine black ink (or a mono laser printer if you print a lot) keeps outlines sharp.
